FAQ

Straight answers before you commit

Availability, sync, collaboration, AI limits, and billing—aligned with what the product ships today.

Is Trovepile only a bookmark manager?

No. It starts with tab sessions and bookmarks — save a burst of tabs, organize troves, restore sessions later. Highlights, smart search, and Library Assistant run on that library. Optional notes and light tasks can enrich saved pages; Trovepile is not a project-management or docs-first product.

Which platforms are available?

Web app and the browser extension (Chromium) are available today. Desktop (Wave 3) and mobile (Wave 2) are on the rolling launch — join the waitlist on the download page. Firefox/Safari extensions are not advertised until shipped.

Does Trovepile support teams?

Yes. Team and Business tiers include higher quotas and team-sized seat limits. Use shared workspaces and viewer/editor-style flows so research stays structured.

Can I import existing bookmarks?

Yes. Browser import is part of the product story—use Settings → Import in the web app (exact formats depend on your build).

Can I export my data?

Yes. Export paths live under settings so your library stays portable. Keep a backup before canceling paid plans.

Is mobile available?

Mobile apps for iOS and Android are in Wave 2 of the rolling launch. Join the mobile waitlist for TestFlight or Play closed-track access when builds are ready — the web app and extension work fully today.

How does sync work? What about offline?

When you’re signed in, your workspace syncs through Trovepile’s backend so web and extension stay aligned today; desktop and mobile join the same library as they ship. Offline-capable surfaces (e.g. IndexedDB in the web app) may allow reading or queued actions until you reconnect.

What AI does Trovepile actually do?

AI runs on your saved library, not the open web. Six capabilities ship today:

1. Smart search — semantic + lexical + recency ranking across bookmarks, sessions, highlights, and troves.
2. Library Assistant — RAG chat with citations, scoped to all library, one trove, multiple troves, or a group.
3. Page chat — from the browser extension, ask the assistant about the page or YouTube video you're on.
4. YouTube Q&A — structured transcript summaries and timestamped answers ([t=123s]).
5. Cleanup suggestions (beta) — bookmark titles/tags, highlights → bullet summaries, optional note → task drafts.
6. Summarize → source — compact a passage and attach it back to the trove or session.

How does page chat in the extension work? Does my browsing get stored?

From the extension, the assistant can answer about the current tab. The extension sends an ephemeral excerpt (or your selection) along with the question. That excerpt is not stored in your library unless you choose to bookmark the page. Page text is treated as data, not as instructions — prompts hidden inside a page are ignored.

Is my library indexed automatically? Can I turn it off?

Yes — when you save a bookmark, session tab, or highlight, Trovepile creates embeddings in the background so it's instantly searchable and chat-ready. There is no manual reindex step required for new content. A manual /ai/reindex path exists for rebuilding when needed. Indexing usage shows up in Settings → AI Usage.

What are the AI quotas, and how can I see usage?

Each AI capability has its own monthly bucket (UTC reset on the 1st):

Smart searches / month — Free 80 · Pro 800 · Team 8,000 · Business 40,000.
Assistant turns / month — Free 15 · Pro 150 · Team 800 · Business 4,000.
AI suggestions (beta) / month — Free 25 · Pro 200 · Team 2,000 · Business 10,000 (shared across bookmark cleanup, highlights→tasks, note→tasks).
Summarize excerpt / month — Free 20 · Pro 150 · Team 800 · Business 4,000.

Settings → AI Usage shows your monthly summary and event log: per-kind tokens (embed / chat) and an internal estimated USD figure for transparency.

Can my team bring its own OpenAI key (BYOK)?

BYOK is supported on the API today and ships UI when the deployment flag (AI_BYOK_ENABLED) is enabled after security review. Status is visible at Settings → BYOK. With BYOK, AI calls authenticate against your own OpenAI account and are billed there separately from Trovepile's subscription.

Solo vs team plans?

Free and Pro target individuals. Team adds collaboration-scale quotas and seat allowances. Business adds the highest published limits; purchasing may route through contact sales.

What happens if I cancel or downgrade?

Paid features remain until the end of the billing period you already paid for. After that, your account moves to Free entitlements. Export important data first.
